Women's Hoops Year In Review

Another stellar year of women's hoops action took place in 2008-09, with teams from the league having success at both the conference and national level. Delta State advanced to the NCAA Final Four, going 30-7 overall and winning another South Region Championship. The Lady Statesmen finished up GSC play 13-1, and won their fourth straight conference championship.

Amanda Grappe, the 2008-09 West Division Player of the Year, was named a WBCA First Team All-American. The senior forward averaged 19 points per game for the Golden Suns this season. GSC players tabbed as Honorable Mention All-Americans include DSU's Sarita Cooper and UWG's Ashley Huff and Dominic Cranford.

West Georgia and Delta State were the big winners when the 2007-08 All-GSC Women's Team and other post-season awards were announced today by the Gulf South Conference. UWG's Craig Roden won Coach of the Year honors in the East. West Georgia's Dominic Cranford was named Player of the Year and Montevallo's Shan Jones earned Freshman of the Year. In the West, Delta State's Jennifer Rushing took the Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Her coach, Delta State's Sandra Rushing, earned her third straight Coach of the Year award. Ouachita Baptist's Gabby Coleman was the Freshman of the Year winner.

The Lady Statesman, 15-0 on the season, moved up from the number two spot last week. The rest of the poll has a distinct GSC feel, with Valdosta State, West Georgia and Arkansas Tech mired among the 25.
