SAU's Simpson Chosen in First Round, Seven Players Selected Overall

For the first time in 15 years, the Gulf South Conference had seven players chosen in Major League Baseball’s First-Year Amateur Draft including the second-highest pick in League history.

After a two-day delay and a site location change, the first pitch was finally thrown at the 2010 Morgan Keegan Gulf South Conference Baseball Championship Tournament.

Due to the flooding in Millington, Tenn. May 1, the 2010 Morgan Keegan GSC Baseball Tournament has been moved to the campus of Delta State University and Ferriss Field with play beginning Monday.

For the second consecutive season, Southern Arkansas earned the most All-GSC First Team and overall selections on the heels of its first-ever, outright GSC West Division championship.

Alabama-Huntsville designated hitter Josh Bolan, North Alabama pitcher Mitch Handley and Harding first baseman Jason Nappi garnered their first career GSC Baseball weekly honors while Arkansas Tech hurler Blaine Sims earned his second career nod as GSC West Division Pitcher of the Week.

West Florida battery mates Tyler Hastings and Kevin Johnson swept the GSC East Division Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, respectively, and Johnson also took home National Player of the Week accolades after throwing a no-hitter Sunday. In the West Division, Delta State's Michael Niemann and Henderson State's Anthony Gilliland took home the first laurels of their career.

The Gulf South Conference lost a member of its baseball alumni Monday afternoon when former Arkansas Tech first baseman and Ouachita Baptist assistant coach Ryan White sadly lost his life in a single car accident near Hernando, Miss. He was 27 years old.
