4/26/2010

UNA, UWF, VSU and ATU extended their seasons

For the second consecutive season, the Gulf South Conference placed four teams in the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf regional field.

This year’s South/Southeast Regional Tournament will be held from May 3-5 at the Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C.  A total of 20 teams comprise the regional field which includes 10 South Region squads and 10 Southeast Region teams.  The top five schools regardless of region advance to the NCAA Championships, May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, IN.

North Alabama enters the regional event as the No. 3 South Region seed after claiming its second straight GSC Title a week ago.  Following UNA’s lead are league rivals, No. 4 seed West Florida, No. 7 seed Valdosta State and No. 10 seed Arkansas Tech.  The Sunshine State Conference made up the other six tournament spots.

The GSC did not stop there, also adding three of the four individual at-large berths:  Henderson State’s Ben Cuzen (No. 1), Delta State's Chase Smith (No. 2) and West Georgia’s Bryn Powers (No. 3).

Complete regional results along with Live Statistics will be available and can be found here.

GSC teams have won five NCAA Division II National Championships (West Florida, 2001 and 2008; Troy State, 1976, 1977, 1984) and finished second five times (Troy State, 1978, 1983, 1992; Valdosta State, 1989; North Alabama 2008).  Individuals from the Conference have also faired well capturing medalist honors in 1994 and 1995 (Valdosta State’s Briny Baird) and 1998 (West Florida’s Orjan Larsen).  Troy State’s Paul Perini is the only other player in GSC history to capture national medalist honors (1980).
