| VSU's Gumbrecht and DSU's Benzaki named GSC Players of the Year |
Birmingham, AL—The Gulf South Conference proudly announces its 2010 Women’s Tennis All-Conference Team.
West Division Champion Delta State led the way with four All-GSC First Team members. GSC Champion Valdosta State and West Florida followed with three First Team selections, while Harding and North Alabama added two First Teamers. Arkansas Tech and Henderson State rounded out the First Team list with one selection each.
EAST DIVISION PLAYER HONORS
VSU senior Natali Gumbrecht became just the third player in history to claim back-to-back GSC East Division Player of the Year honors. She is also just the fourth player to earn two awards in a career, while collecting VSU’s 10th all-time award.
Mariana Sonnervig is the third UWF star to be named GSC Freshman of the Year, marking the first Argonaut winner since 2006.
DSU SWEEPS WEST DIVISION AWARDS
DSU swept the GSC West Division individual awards for the first time ever.
Cecile Benzaki wrapped up her senior season in grand fashion, earning the GSC West Division Player of the Year for the second time in three years. Benzaki became the third two-time West winner and is just DSU’s third overall honoree.
Laura Mongin is the second consecutive Lady Statesmen netter to be named GSC Freshman of the Year after posting an 11-2 regular season record at No. 4 singles. Mongin was also Delta State’s fourth freshman honoree.
VSU’S HANSEN NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR
Valdosta State’s John Hansen was named the GSC Coach of the Year for the fifth time. Hansen posted his second award in three seasons after leading the Lady Blazers to the East Division and GSC Titles. VSU currently ranks No. 3 in the South Region and No. 6 in the nation.
ALL-GSC TEAM
Highlighting the 2010 All-Conference Teams is one four-time All-GSC First Teamer and a trio of three-time selections.
VSU’s Raphaella Durante is the 11th player to make the All-GSC First Team in each of her four seasons. Making their third First Team appearances are Valdosta State’s Natalia Gumbrecht, Arkansas Tech’s Saki Matsuoka and Delta State’s Cecile Benzaki. Matsuoka and Benzaki return for the third straight season, while Gumbrecht is back for the third time in four years.
Returning from the 2009 First Team are DSU’s Lisa Jamais, VSU’s Tina Trautmann and UWF’s Paulina Ojeda.
Making the jump from last year’s Second Team are North Alabama’s Lenka Hola, West Florida’s Taylor Brewster, Harding’s Lola Pardo and Henderson State’s Stephanie Schnobel. Pardo was also a Second Team selection in 2007.
