| UNA's Munson is the Player of the Year |
Birmingham, AL-The Gulf South Conference is proud to announce the 2010 All-GSC Men's Golf Team as selected the league's coaches.
North Alabama and West Florida each posted three total players on the squad, led by a trio of UWF First Teamers and two from UNA. Arkansas Tech, Harding, Valdosta State (one First Team) and West Georgia placed two overall standouts, while Arkansas-Monticello, Delta State, Henderson State (one First Team) and Southern Arkansas added one honoree apiece.
GSC INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
Brett Munson became UNA's first GSC Player of the Year since 2005 (James Porter). Munson supported his No. 2 GolfStat Division II ranking yesterday, topping the leaderboard at the 2010 GSC Tournament by firing the lowest 54-hole score ever in the event (-12).
West Florida provided a GSC Freshman of the Year for the fourth straight season. Blake Olson is UWF's fifth overall honoree since the award's inception in 2002. Olson is ranked 41st in the GolfStat Division II rankings and boasts a 74.00 scoring average.
North Alabama's Stuart Clark made league history when the former GSC Individual Medalist was tabbed the GSC Coach of the Year. Clark became first person to take home both awards, after finishing in first place in the 1996 GSC Tournament. The UNA alum grabbed the reins from legendary coach Billy Gamble, leading the Lions to their second straight Conference Title and a No. 5 national ranking.
ALL-GSC TEAM
The 2010 All-GSC Team is led by a pair returning First Team members.
UNA's Brett Munson and West Florida sophomore Ryan Blake were named to the First Team for the second consecutive year. The fourth time was the charm for Henderson State senior Ben Cuzen as he advanced to the First Team after collecting Second Team laurels the past three seasons. UWF junior Otto Bonning also moved up after Second Team honors in 2008 and 2009, while North Alabama sophomore Jake Greer improved on last year's Second Team. Completing the First Team list was Valdosta State senior Chesley Gunn and UWF freshman Blake Olson.
The 2010 All-GSC Second Team featured the most honorees in the award's history. Eleven players made the list, led by two returning members. Arkansas Tech senior Jonathon Spikes was a 2007 Second Teamer, while Delta State junior Chase Smith was on the 2008 squad. Arkansas-Monticello earned its first-ever All-GSC men's golfer in junior Camron Hurst. Rounding out the Second Team is ATU senior Ryan Hitt, Harding freshmen Blake Chase and Brandon Cauldwell, North Alabama sophomore Tyler Ekenberg, Southern Arkansas sophomore Peyton Mitchell, VSU junior Chad Smith and UWG senior Ryan Chitwood and freshman Eric Alvarez.
