UNA Sweeps GSC Women's Soccer Annual Awards

ROBERTS WINS PLAYER AND FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR HONORS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -North Alabama forward Chloe Roberts became the fourth women's soccer player and first since 2003 to claim both the GSC Player and Freshman of the Year awards. The Plymouth, England native led the GSC in shots (105), points (71) and goals scored (29) in her first season as a Lion, shattering team records in all offensive categories. The honors are the first major soccer awards in UNA school history as the Lions earned their first GSC Tournament berth since 1999. Roberts also led the way for North Alabama who totaled the second-most All-GSC selections and equaled the most First Team honorees with five. Joining the freshman on the squad is two-time First Team honoree goalkeeper Alexandra McLay and three fellow newcomers Julia Osmond (defender), Nikki Brown and Josie Chubb (midfielders).

UWF LEADS ALL-GSC TEAM

After a record-setting season and dominating its competition, West Florida led all schools with eight All-GSC selections and five First Team members. The Argos finished their first perfect regular season in school history at 17-0-0 and outscored opponents 96-6, including a 43-2 differential in seven league contests. Last year's GSC and National Player of the Year Shaneka Gordon was joined on the First Team by newcomer Shakira Duncan, a junior college transfer that broke school records for points (65) and goals scored (27). Also earning First Team honors were defender Kaley Morris and midfielders Marcela Franco and Dernelle Mascall. Morris was a Second Team honoree last season while Mascall makes a return to the First Team after earning said honors in 2007. Franco is the fourth Argonaut to earn three First Team All-GSC accolades and the first since 2001 (Roni McGinniss). 2008 First Team selection Shameka Gordon, twin sister of Shaneka, claimed Second Team laurels this season at defender as did three-time All-GSC nominee goalkeeper Courtney Jones. Jones was First Team winner in 2007 and Second Teamer in 2006. Rounding out the UWF contingent was senior midfielder Jodi Galucci.

After UWF and UNA was Harding with two All-GSC players and Christian Brothers, Alabama-Huntsville and West Georgia with one choice each. The Lady Bisons were lead by three-time All-Conference standout Minnie Guzman on the First Team and junior defender Hayley Withrow on the Second. Guzman earned First Team honors in 2007 and made the Second Team last year. CBU defender Roma Rozanska rounded out the First Team contingent. Seniors Jenna Greathouse of UWG and Devin Newman of UAH earned Second Team honors to complete the All-GSC squad.

WINKWORTH NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR TO COMPLETE UNA SWEEP

North Alabama head coach Graham Winkworth earned the school's first GSC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year after guiding the Lions to their first GSC Tournament berth in 10 years. In his seventh season at the helm of the UNA program, Winkworth led the team to unprecedented heights as the Lions broke school records for wins in a season. Winkworth's recruiting abilities were also highlighted as four of the five Lions selected to the All-GSC First Team were freshman, including Player and Freshman of the Year Chloe Roberts.
